For three years, I had the privilege of working in collaboration with the City Council of Vilanova i la Geltrú, a city with a rich festive tradition dating back to the 15th century. In Catalonia, fire is much more than a decorative element in celebrations. It is the symbolic heart of many popular and traditional festivities, a protagonist that breathes life into myths, beliefs, and rituals, while fueling legends passed down through generations. These festivities embody the fire we all carry within: a critical spirit, a spark of satire, and a collective tool that unites communities while offering a means of expression and catharsis. Fire becomes an allegory of the people, a blazing message to the foundations of a society in constant need of rebuilding.
